Ben Pfeiffer takes audiences deep into the world of Texas fireflies, blending natural history, field research, and conservation with an unfolding scientific mystery. Participants will learn about the diversity of fireflies (family Lampyridae) found in Texas and across the United States, how to recognize common species by their flash patterns, and why fireflies use light to communicate.  Ben will highlight the habitats that fireflies depend on - and why these ecosystems are increasingly under threat.

Fee: $25 ($20 member). Registration closes when the class is filled. Member discount, including $3 fee waived, will be applied at checkout.

Ben Pfeiffer is the founder of Firefly Conservation & Research, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting fireflies and their habitats across the United States. A field researcher, science educator, and engaging public speaker, his work focuses on documenting Texas and North American firefly diversity, behavior, and habitat needs, much of it previously unrecorded. Ben is actively involved in the search for rare and possibly “lost” firefly species and collaborates with organizations including the IUCN Firefly Specialist Group, Xerces Society, Texas Parks & Wildlife, and The Nature Conservancy. A sixth-generation Texan, he studied Biology at Texas State University and is a Texas-certified Master Naturalist.
